Collaborative learning?

Yes there are alternatives to WebCT/FirstClass/Blackboard - open source collaborative learning environments, such as Moodle, Claroline, FLE3 and Manhattan (some in early days of development - all with demonstrations online)

Are they any good? Rob Reynolds, over at xplana.com ('exploring how we can teach & learn with technology'), has just put together a review of Open Source Content Management Systems, which he refers to in his article "It Takes a Village to Build Good Software and Education". Well worth a read!

There are a number of collaborative learning environments designed with this combination, for example Moodle, a recent development which eems to be gaining popularity very rapidly.
