Desktop Software

You probably know that Windows is not your only option as far as Operating Systems go. You can use Apple Mac, if you have an Apple computer.

You can also use one of many "UNIX" variants - Linux is the front-runner, and it comes in many flavours - RedHat, Mandrake (both good for beginners), SuSE, Debian, Slackware, Turbo, Caldera, Corel, and more. Currently my favourite is Knoppix - not officially a "distro" (distribution) - but good value because you can boot straight from the CD.

Office software

Openoffice.org is a free office suite - very good with 3D graphics, and sophisticated in terms of the range of formats it will export to. Backed by Sun Microsystems.

AbiWord is a word processor in early development stages.

Web

Mozilla is an open source web browser-mail-editor suite, based in Netscape - (Phoenix - now known as Mozilla Firebird - has just become the official browser - great web browser with in-built 'pop-up blocker', google search bar, tabbed browsing , and many great extensions!)
