Other Freebies

Open Source refers to a particular kind of license where you can access the source code that made the program. Not all freeware is open source, and there are many many other freebies online. For example,

• Free community tools at mc2@vicnet, or at EdNA (education network Australia - worth many visits)
• Lots of free learning stuff at Merlot - a US-based multimedia-in-education network
• Free web space for community groups at vicnet
• A great file manager - 2xExplorer (with the fastest text editor inbuilt)
• Many FTP programs, including AceFTP (AdWare - light version of commercial software)
• Brilliant screen capture program from Gadwin
• Free clipart for educators at HalfBaked
• Xenu LinkChecker - for checking links on your web page

You can search the many Freeware web sites, eg pricelessware, tinyApps (very small programs - you must take a look at "tinyApps" - all programs that fit on a floppy disk).

Or search the more standard software sites such as TUCOWS ("the ultimate collection of windows software"), and put 'freeware' in your search. Generally these sites list the sort of license with the program.

.. or go googling for "freeware + ** programs" - where ** is the kind of software you're after - you'll find hundreds ..
