"Snakes Alive!"PageTurners is a successful range of books for beginning adult literacy learners, produced by Material Galz, in collaboration with PRACE. PageTurners books are now read all over the world, with orders coming from NZ, Canada and New Guinea. In order to attract more readers, offer a fuller service and develop staff skills, PRACE wanted to support the production team to develop an online learning resource. The team wanted to create an online learning resource - a small website for literacy-learners, consisting of a story with illustrations and interactive activities. We were lucky enough to gain some funding from LearnLinks - the RMIT& ACE Learning Network. The Material Galz authors are Anne Dunn, Chris Malakar and Moira Hanrahan - who also creates the wonderful illustrations. Michael Chalk took on a guest editing responsibility for this web-based project. Here the development team learned the benefits of brainstorming a range of different screen layouts, and seeking feedback on the first few pages, before constructing the entire resource. It's best to be thoroughly aware of potential problems from the start - to have one model page working effectively first - so you can save much time in the long run. The exciting (for us) new feature of this resource is the interactive sound - a 'read-along' feature. We used Macromedia Flash software to incorporate sound into the web page - a great new skill for the development team. This new story - about a couple of friends who run into trouble while bushwalking - is now freely available via http://pageturners.prace.vic.edu.au/ |
