Memorable students -(none of the learners described here are described by their real names) Angela is over seventy. Her family has always treated her as the stupid one. She’s been coming to PRACE classes for five years – and finally is making some progress. Angela has never had any visual word recognition before. Her English speaking skills are very basic – she will speak Italian even though nobody understands. We suspect some level of intellectual disability. However, this year, there is a real sense of breakthrough. Angela is now reading some basic words, making sense of written text, and growing her abilities at a steady pace. She has also begun to use the computers – Protea textware and two PageTurners books on the screen, with audio ‘read-along’. |
