Dave taught us.. to respect the needs of young people to do what they want in pursuit of their own learning. He was a young man - fifteen years old, who was brilliant with computers - screen navigation and web searching, but had a very low level of ability when it came to decoding text. He would spend hours in a chat room, but often had to ask for help reading replies to his messages. Dave would refuse to do any group work - in fact any work that wasn't exactly what he wanted to do. He was interested in Railroad Tycoon - an amazingly complex software tool for building simulated transport empires - and chatting online, both arguably useful activities for developing literacies. The teacher in this class would get extremely frustrated trying to encourage Dave to join in with group work or "literacy activities". Soon after Dave joined the class, PRACE started its own Youth Program, seeking out teachers with the skills to deal with new kind of learner. This was around the time when many adult providers around the state found more and more young people coming into their programs - and challenging teachers to upgrade their skills once more. |
