Computer Classes at Merrilands Community Centre

COMPUTER CLUB

You can learn to build, upgrade and maintain your computer, with this group of enthusiastic people. The group has been together for a few years, and runs as a 'self-help' group - where people help each other to learn more about computer hardware. Find out more at computerclub.org.au

Computer Classes at Preston Neighbourhood House

BITES FOR OLDER ADULTS (BASIC IT ENABLING SKILLS)

If you are: Over 45 years of age, unemployed and seeking paid work, or have part-time work but still receive income support from Centrelink, then you may be eligible for this free computer training opportunity.

Achieve modules from the Certificate 1 in Information Technology (ICA99):

  • Operate a personal computer (ICAITU128A)
  • Send and receive information over the internet using browsers & email (ICITU133A)
  • Operate a word processing application (ICAITU129A)
  • Up to 10 hours additional training support is also offered.

Cost: Free for those who meet the BITES eligibility criteria. Dates to be confirmed.

CERTIFICATE 2 - IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (I.T.) (ICA20201)

In partnership with RMIT University, PRACE is able to offer this course that can be completed in your own time or with teacher assistance at the Preston Neighbourhood House.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS & BASIC WORD PROCESSING, Parts 1 and 2

Terrified of computers? This beginner’s course will give you the confidence to perform basic tasks on a computer. Learn to work with windows and to write, edit and format letters and documents.

Are you busy during the day with work or family commitments? This small friendly class will give you the opportunity to improve your spelling, reading and writing.

LEARNER PERMIT

If you have difficulty reading the Learner Permit handbook and are concerned about sitting the test at Vic Roads on your own, why not join this 4-day course. To be held during Term 2 School Holidays. Dates and cost to be confirmed.

READING, WRITING & SPELLING LEVEL 2 /3

Improve your reading, writing and spelling skills, in this class, designed for people from an English Speaking background who have left school early.

Starting:Term1 - 3rd February
Term 2: - 31st March
Friday 9.30 - 12.30pm
Cost: $52 concession for the year, or $74.50 full price per semester.

FUNCTIONAL LITERACY

For people with a mild intellectual disability.

This class is designed for people with basic letter/word recognition who want to improve their reading and writing. Students are given the opportunity to achieve modules at level 1 of the Certificate in General Education for Adults - Introductory (21249VIC)

Starting:Term 1 - 3rd February
Term 2 - 31st March
Friday 10.00am- 2.00pm
Cost: $52 concession for the year, or $100 full price per semester.

FUNCTIONAL NUMERACY ·

For people with a mild intellectual disability.

Improve your numeracy skills. Students are given the opportunity to achieve modules at level 1 of the Certificate in General Education for Adults - Introductory (21249VIC)

Term 2 - 30th March

REAL LIFE MATHS

This course covers basic and practical maths topics to help students build confidence and skills in basic maths.

English as a Second Language / English Literacy

ADULT MIGRANT ENGLISH PROGRAM AMEP = "510 hours"

For people who have recently arrived in Australia as a migrant or on humanitarian grounds. The AMEP provides Basic English as a second language classes. Free childcare is available if required.

Day or Evening, Full-time (15 hours a week) & Part Time
Accredited: Certificates 1, 2 & 3 in Spoken and Written English (9099-2,3,4NSW)

This class offers the opportunity to develop initial beginning level skills in English reading writing, for participants from language backgrounds other than English. Students are given the opportunity to attain modules from Cert I in ESL (Entry/Access) 21496VIC/21497VIC.

ENGLISH LEVEL 1

This class is for people who speak and read a little English but want to expand their vocabulary and improve their written English. Students can achieve modules of the Certificate I in Spoken and Written English. CSWE (90994NSW)

ENGLISH CONVERSATION LEVEL 2

Improve your English language skills in this friendly class. Students are given the opportunity to achieve modules from Certificate 2 in Spoken and Written English (90993NSW).

ENGLISH LEVEL 3

In this class students will continue to build on their basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills while working towards achieving modules of Certificate 3 in Spoken and Written English (90992NSW).

EVENING ENGLISH LEVELS 1 - 3

These classes are for beginner to advanced learners who want to improve their reading, writing and speaking skills. Students have the opportunity to achieve modules in the Certificates in Spoken and Written English 1, 2 & 3 (90994NSW, 90993NSW, 90992NSW)

CONVERSATION & VOCABULARY

In this class you will have the opportunity to improve your vocabulary & conversational skills through a range of English Language activities.

Youth Programs (15 to 24 year olds)

These classes are nationally accredited courses within the Australian Qualifications Framework and Victorian Qualifications Authority.

NOISY GIRLS

Making music with young women: write your own songs, play your own music, record your own CD. You don’t need any musical experience, you don’t even need to be able to play an instrument, you just need to love music.

Starting: Semester Two (after June)

RETAIL TRAINING FOR YOUNG ADULTS

Are you interested in employment in the retail industry? Do you want to build your retail and sales skills? This course offers modules in the Certificate II in Retail Operations (WRR20102).

Starting: Term 2 - 3rd April
Mon, Tues, Wed: 9.30am - 2.30pm
20 week course, 15 hrs per week
Cost: $52 conc. Exemptions available.

YOUTH SKILLS

For young people between the ages of 15-19 who are no longer at school and who want to develop their reading, writing and general skills. Subjects offered include Maths, English, Humanities, Art, Computers.

CALLIGRAPHY

Learn the basics on the art of calligraphy. Suits both beginner and those with some previous experience.

MOSAIC COURSE

A 6 week introduction to Mosaics. Create a beautiful art piece - table top, picture frame, wall hanging etc.

WOMEN’S GENTLE EXERCISE CLASS

Particularly for women over 50 this program will offer a range of gentle exercise routines to improve your flexibility and general well being.

MORE THAN MONEY CAN BUY

Explore ways to improve your lifestyle without needing extra money. Participants may consider developing a local trading scheme from this group.

Kids Holiday Arts & Craft Program

Journal Making

Suit children aged 8 – 12
Make your own scrapbook, diary, photo album. Decorate using stencils, collage, paint etc. Have a great finished product to take home on the day!
Starting: Wednesday January 11th 9.30 - 12.30 & Wednesday January 18th 1 - 4pm
Cost: $15 per session includes all materials and tuition (please bring a snack)

Create Your Own Project

Suit children aged 5 – 10
Using a range of arts materials you can let your imagination run wild and create the art piece of your dreams. Using paints, glue, collage, potato print, stencils etc. You will have a wonderful piece to take home with you on the day.
Starting: Thursday January 12th 9.30 - 12.30 & Thursday January 19th 1 - 4pm
Cost: $15 per session includes all materials and tuition (please bring a snack)
