Fardosa’s Learning Journey at Prace

Posted April 22, 2025

Fardosa’s story is one of resilience, growth, and new beginnings. A proud graduate of Certificate III in English as an Additional Language (EAL) in 2024, Fardosa has become an inspiration to her classmates and teachers at Prace. Her learning journey through Prace’s EAL program is a powerful example of what can be achieved with determination and the right support.

Originally from Somalia, Fardosa has been living in Australia for 13 years. Like many new arrivals, her early years were dedicated to raising her children, and she delayed learning English because she was busy and, admittedly, a little scared. “Now I wonder why I waited so long,” she says.

Fardosa began in Prace’s EAL program, starting at Course in EAL and progressing steadily through Level 1 and Level 2 before completing her Certificate III in 2024. Along the way, she gained more than just language skills. “I learned how to speak to doctors, teachers at my child’s school, and how to use public transport. I even learned about Australian culture,” she shares.

One of the most meaningful outcomes of the course has been her ability to support her son, who has autism. “It helped me a lot with communicating with teachers and doctors and understanding my son’s needs.”

For Fardosa, Prace became more than just a place to learn—it became a second home.
“The teachers are very nice and helpful. At first, I was nervous, but slowly my confidence grew. We learned about Australian culture, which was my favourite. I always tell my friends to come here.”

Today, Fardosa feels proud and excited for what lies ahead. She’s currently working on her learner’s permit and taking part in driving lessons through Prace’s Friday driving group. “I was scared of driving, but now I’m learning. I want to be independent. After this, I hope to study at Melbourne Polytechnic.”

When asked what advice she has for others thinking of starting their learning journey, Fardosa says:
“Don’t say, ‘I can’t do it.’ Be positive, be confident, and don’t make excuses. It’s hard at first, but if you stay home, you will never learn anything.”

Now a proud Australian citizen, Fardosa is deeply thankful for the support she’s received at Prace.
“I really appreciate all my teachers—Belinda, Marina, Christina, and many others. My cousin in the UK motivated me to start. Who would have known what I could achieve?”

Fardosa’s story is just one of many, but it reminds us of the life-changing impact of learning, community, and a place like Prace.
