Learning Beyond The Classroom

Posted February 25, 2020

Facebook groups are a new initiative our English as an Additional Language (EAL) students have been using to extend their learning beyond the classroom.

Shveta, one of our EAL teachers, introduced the use of closed Facebook groups to our level II students in 2019. The closed group compliments classroom learning, providing students with an opportunity to practice their written skills in a supportive environment.

In the beginning students had varying levels of confidence in navigating technology. But, now the students have embraced the platform they are able to share ideas, interests, and experiences in Australia.

Beyond the educational component, students have openly share their appreciation for the PRACE community. And, most importantly, Shveta says students have formed new connections and  “enjoy sharing stories and about their life, culture and current affairs”.

This year we will trial the platform with level III EAL classes, and plan to open membership of the group to all level II and III students by the end of the year.
