PRACE EAL student Xiu had a successful 20-year career in nursing before arriving in Australia in 2016.
“Coming to Australia from China really felt like starting my life over, something I never thought that I’d experience” she says.
Xiu wanted to pursue nursing in Australia and despite how daunting it felt. Upon arriving in Melbourne, She immediately enrolled in English classes to build her skills.
“To me, the sooner I could improve my English, the sooner I could start making my dream of returning to nursing come true” she explains.
It took a bit of trial and error to find an educational provider that felt right for Xiu. Seeing his partner experience frustration within a larger institution, Xiu’s husband decided to explore study options and discovered PRACE offers tailored study options.
“My husband told me he had found a local provider that offered four levels of English, something I was really looking for as my existing classes had students of all levels in one class. Being with students of the same level of English feels right for me” she explains.
Xiu started studying at PRACE in March 2020, just a few weeks prior to the Covid-19 lockdown. Despite the challenges of remote learning, with the support of her teacher, Xiu feels that her English has improved significantly.
“It’s not easy studying at home with a baby, but I’m really focused on my education. The teaching at PRACE is great as Shveta brings so much warmth and enthusiasm to each class. I look forward to logging in each day and I’m working hard to get the most out of each class” she says.
Xiu is looking forward to a return to regular classes at PRACE and the social activities and sense of community that PRACE is famous for.
“I have heard that life at PRACE is very social. I’m looking forward to making new friends and enjoying activities outside of class with them” she adds.
We’re excited to be on this journey with Xiu – with her focus and ambition we’re sure it’s only a matter of time before she achieves her dreams.
