Refugee Week 2026: Prace Cultural Food Fair

Prace College’s second annual Cultural Food Fair brought Prace College students, Prace English As An Additional Language (EAL) students, and staff together to celebrate the many cultures that make up our learning community.

In support of National Refugee Week (14 – 20 June), the event embraced this year’s theme, ‘A Million Stories’, using food as a way to celebrate and recognise the diverse experiences, backgrounds and traditions that enrich life at Prace.

Student-run stalls featured a fantastic range of homemade dishes from around the world, including kabsa from Saudi Arabia, miso and vegetable soup from Japan, chicken tinga tacos from Mexico, bruschetta from Italy, jollof from Nigeria, and baklava from Türkiye.

On the left is a table with the Japanese flag and posters explaining the Japanese dish 'Onigiri'. On the table is a big silver pot with onigiri on plates beside it. To the right of the image is another table with the Mexican flag and a poster explaining the Mexican dish 'Chicken Tinga Tacos'. On the table is guacamole, tortillas, pico de gallo and the seasoned chicken taco filling.
Two women are smiling holding up plates of food. On the left is a woman with long brown hair and a fringe. She is wearing a green jumper under a black puffer jacket. On the right is a woman with blonde hair sitting at a table. She is wearing a black top with a colourful striped shawl over her shoulders.

The food fair also gave Prace EAL students a valuable opportunity to practise their English, build confidence and share an important part of their culture with others.

A special thank you to Prace College staff member Alexis for organising the event alongside Marina and her EAL class for preparing such wonderful food and contributing so much enthusiasm to the day.

Thank you also to everyone who attended and to those generous individuals who donated on the day, raising close to $100 for charity!

The Cultural Food Fair continues to be a wonderful way to celebrate the diversity of the Prace community, creating opportunities to learn from one another through food, conversation and shared experiences.

"For 40 years, Refugee Week has been breaking down barriers and connecting people through shared human experiences. At a time when global displacement is at record levels, Refugee Week serves as an important reminder of the role communities play in creating places of safety, belonging, and opportunity."

A table is set up with a box of desserts from Libya on the left, including Kaak, Ghraybeh and Maamoul. In front of the box is a sign that reads 'Libya' with Libya's national flag attached. On the right is a tray of the Italian dessert Crostoli. In front of the tray is an information sheet about Italy and how the recipe for Crostoli.
A variety of Syrian desserts sit on a table in four different containers on a white table cloth. On the front of the table is a poster with the Syrian Flag and text that reads 'Syria. Syrian Sweets.'
