Raising Awareness for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Posted June 14, 2024

In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15th, the team at Darebin City Council ran the Warm Safe Home Project to spotlight the issue of elder abuse. This art-based initiative used the image of a house to symbolise older adults’ right to feel safe and live free from fear. Sadly, in cases of elder abuse, the home can become a place of danger.

We encouraged all groups to use this time to engage in meaningful discussions about elder abuse, highlight the importance of respecting older individuals, and advocate for everyone’s right to a safe home.

For those interested in participating, we had 25 house templates available for collection. Once decorated, participants returned their homes and were exhibited at Preston Library on June 4th and are now displayed at the Melbourne Town Hall.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to creating these warm, safe homes. Your efforts are helping to make a difference in our community.
