At Prace, our classrooms are not only places of learning, but spaces where connections are made, and lives intersect in unexpected and enriching ways.

For Tony and Fiaz, two students in our Certificate I in English as an Additional Language class, what began as a shared goal to improve their English has grown into a joyful and enduring friendship that now connects their families as well.

Fiaz, originally from Pakistan, and Tony, from Taiwan, first met in class with little shared language between them. In those early days, they relied solely on Google Translate on their phones to communicate with each other. Despite the language barrier, they quickly formed a bond, supporting each other in class; practising together; and building confidence in their English language skills.

Both students enrolled with a clear purpose: to strengthen their communication skills and better engage with life in Australia. For Fiaz, the class has been a positive and welcoming environment:

“I chose to enrol in English class to improve my speaking and listening. My favourite thing about this class is learning new words and speaking with my class mates. The teacher is very helpful…I feel happy and comfortable in this class because all class mates are friendly and helpful.”

Tony shares a similar motivation and appreciation for the program:

“I can learn English and the teacher will also teach about culture, life and skills. I only feel happy learning in this class. Everything in this class [is] great. It has given me a lot.”

As their confidence grew, so did their friendship, extending beyond the classroom into their everyday lives.

Their families have since met and spent time together, sharing meals and memorable experiences. On one occasion, Tony and his wife visited Fiaz’s home, where they were treated to a feast of traditional Pakistani cuisine. Tony is now looking forward to returning the hospitality by cooking a meal for Fiaz and his family.

The two families have also enjoyed outings together, including a recent trip to Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Fiaz is on the right a wears a white, collared t-shirt. He has dark brown hair and a moustache and wears reading glasses.

“Fiaz’s family brought lunch for everyone and I drove them to the zoo. It was hot and the animals were out and about,” said Tony.

Fiaz added:

“It was a very nice trip. We saw many animals like lions and giraffes. We enjoyed a lot and took many photos.”

Tony is standing on the left and Fiaz is standing on the right with his arm around Tony. Both men wear collared long-sleeve shirts. Tony's is pinstripe with white and blue, and Fiaz's is dark blue. Fiaz is also wearing reading glasses. They are both standing in front of a brick wall painted dark grey. To the right is a sign that reads 'Prace'.

Tony and Fiaz’s story is a powerful reminder of what community education can achieve.

At Prace, learning English is not only about improving language skills and confidence, but it is also about meeting people and feeling a part of a welcoming and supportive community where new experiences are shared and joyful memories are made.

We wish both Tony and Fiaz all the best with their future studies and wonderful enduring friendship!
