When Nikki completed her studies in the Certificate III in Education Support at Prace last year she was formalising a long-held interest in, and talent for, teaching. It was during the Covid lockdowns while supporting her son’s schooling that she realised it was time to take the next step and pursue a career in education support.
“My husband and I have a son with dyslexia and we’d always supported the children with their homework, but during Covid it was much more intense. I wasn’t just helping my son with projects anymore, we were working together one-on-one and it was such a great feeling to share those lightbulb moments when my son learned something and really ‘got it’.
I talked to my family about my dream of returning to study and they were totally supportive. I had some concerns about doing it after so long and perhaps finding myself as the only mature age student in a sea of teenagers, but then the mother of one of my son’s basketball team mates told me about the Education Support program at Prace.
She told me she loved the feel of Prace community because the classes were small and offered a very personal and supportive learning environment. That piqued my interest and set me on the path to enrolling.
My course was six months long and included 100 hours of placement in a school. Our Prace trainers, Steve and Edita, were amazing and walked us through our assignments, explaining what was expected at each step. They really set us up for success. We had a study buddy messenger group online which worked well because we could pick the brains of fellow students. It was not only a great commodity but also helped build the excellent bonding we had in the class.
The course content was so practical. Everything we learned was useful and highly relevant, so I enjoyed all the topics and never got bored.
It was our responsibility to find a school for the practical placement but Edita has an extensive network of contacts so she provided recommendations. I think Prace is well known for the quality of its teaching and with Edita’s help everyone found a suitable placement.
I did my placement at William Ruthven Primary School. After two or three placement sessions, the principal encouraged me to apply for a position that was being advertised because he said he’d heard good things about my work so far. I was successful and I am loving my job there.
The Prace community is so warm and welcoming, I’d highly recommend that anyone who’s thinking about studying should take a look at their programs. In fact, one person I met has already applied for next year on my recommendation!”
