Our Graduates: Dora’s Story

Posted October 2, 2023

To celebrate our 30th birthday we are talking to past and present students about how Prace has helped redirect their careers and lives.

Meet Dora. Dora completed the Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management course at Prace in 2012. The course changed her career path and her work life: her job is now her ‘passion’.

Read more about Dora’s learning journey below.

In 2009, Dora had completed a Diploma of Community Welfare at NMIT under the guidance of Prace’s current CEO, Paddy McVeigh, and trainer John Bamborough. Dora had learned of the Advanced Diploma of Community Sector Management course, when Paddy and John began teaching it at Prace.

“I had really enjoyed the course at NMIT,” said Dora. “Paddy and John were great teachers and Paddy in particular really brought the course alive for me. So when I had the offer to study with them at Prace I jumped at the chance.

“All the Prace staff and my peers were fabulous, so it was an exciting time to be a student.

“I completed my Advanced Diploma at the end of 2012 and this qualification was paramount in helping me secure my position with the Salvation Army Preston as the Centre Manager (Emergency Relief). The course at Prace had given me the confidence l needed to apply for this position and without it, l definitely would not have applied.  I had learnt so much more at Prace than just the academic content. They taught me to believe in myself and to take chances. After I completed the Advanced Diploma, l left a good, comfortable government position based on the confidence and belief in myself that I had developed.

It’s important to always follow your dreams and l believe the universe (and Prace!) will help you along the way. Prace not only helped me find my voice and courage, but it also showed me l can make a difference in my small world.  The government job l left was secure, but it would not have been a happy career.

My new ‘job’ is a passion; one l happily get out of bed for each day. I will be forever grateful to Prace and its staff for the guidance and support l was always given.

Thank you Prace – you changed my life.”
