Preparing the Next Generation of Education Support Professionals
Last week, students from our Certificate III in School Based Education Support March 2025 (Reservoir) and June 2025 (Mernda) classes came together for a special workshop designed to help them prepare for their imminent entry into the workforce. Held at Prace Reservoir on Wednesday, 22nd of October, the session featured three industry experts who shared insights, advice, and practical tips with our aspiring education support professionals.
The workshop began with Olga Chirokov, Career and Pathways Advisor from Melbourne Polytechnic Skills & Jobs Centre, who introduced students to the range of services available to support them as they transition into employment. Olga brought her extensive industry knowledge to the session, responding to student questions and providing guidance on career pathways.
Next, Monique Romanin-Canly, Inclusion and Education Support Officer at Glenroy Secondary College and a Prace Graduate herself (September 2022 class), spoke about her journey from student to education support professional. Monique’s presentation offered students an authentic perspective on what to expect in the workplace and strategies for success in a supportive, inclusive environment.
Finally, Jeremy Blaney, Principal of Thomastown East Primary School, emphasised the vital role of education support staff in schools. His words left a lasting impression on the students:
[Education Support staff] are the glue that keeps schools together… without ESs schools don’t run. You make a significant impact so it is a very well rewarded job.
Jeremy also provided sample interview questions, giving students practical tools to help them prepare for employment interviews.
A total of 17 students attended the workshop, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Teachers will now share the valuable resources provided by our guest speakers with all students, ensuring everyone benefits from the advice and insights offered during this session.
We are grateful to Olga, Monique, and Jeremy for their ongoing support of the Prace Education Support program. Their contributions not only enhance our students’ readiness for work but also strengthen the strong partnerships between Prace and the wider education community.
