Afrime enrolled in Prace’s Civil Construction Labourer course in November 2021 after hearing about the course from his father, who was a Prace English language student. The course sounded interesting and a good way to explore other career possibilities in the construction industry. Afrime was part of the first group of students to take the course. He not only completed the course with flying colours, but was subsequently employed by Winslow Constructors. Today Afrime shares his story with us.
“My Dad was a language student at Prace and heard about the course. He thought it sounded interesting and decided to enrol, then he told me about it and I enrolled too!
“I had been working full-time as a bricklayer. It was OK, but every day was a bit the same and I wanted to expand my experience. One of the things I like about the civil construction industry is that there is so much variety in the work.
“We had plenty of hands-on time with different types of machinery in the course. For example, we went to a construction site and were able to have a go on an excavator and that was really good. Ever since I was little I’ve loved machines, so I was keen to learn about as many as I could.
“I would 100 per cent recommend this course to anyone who thinks they might enjoy civil construction work. You learn a lot of different skills and you don’t have to specialise too soon, so you can try various things to find out what suits you best.
“At the end of the course one of the people from Winslow came to talk to our class about possible employment and I was offered a full-time job as a general labourer. I can really see myself having a long-term career in this industry!”
