How Trish Became a Teacher with Prace’s Support

Posted April 24, 2025

For Trish, becoming a teacher has been a dream since childhood. As a dedicated parent volunteer, she spent countless hours supporting her son’s learning in the classroom. It was during this time that others began encouraging her to consider a career in education.

“I was keen to help him as much as I could,” Trish recalls. “So I spent a lot of time in the classroom. People kept suggesting that I should be working in education, but I thought, ‘Oh no, I’m too old, I can’t be changing careers!’”

But Trish took a leap of faith and enrolled in Prace’s Certificate III in School Based Education Support at our Whittlesea campus—and she hasn’t looked back since.

“Becoming a teacher has been my childhood dream,” she says. “I set myself a goal to become a teacher before I turn 50—and I turn 50 this year!”

With the support of her trainer Edita, who Trish describes as “welcoming, understanding and empathetic,” she built the skills and confidence to thrive in the education sector.

“It was my first time studying in a long while, so going back to school was a big leap for me. But Edita explained everything clearly and made the whole experience so positive. She even helped me after the course by reviewing my CV and giving me job application advice.”

Trish worked as an education support assistant for six years and is now on the cusp of reaching her ultimate goal—she’ll complete her Bachelor of Primary Education this September and is already teaching in a senior-level classroom at a local primary school.

Reflecting on her journey, Trish says, “Now, I would encourage people to believe that it’s never too late to follow your dream, if you really want it.”

And her message for others?
“If you’re passionate about working in schools, Prace is the place to start.”
